Chapter Six

Brodie’s chest tightened, threatening to suffocate him as Cora’s words splintered his soul. They were good together. Hell, they were great together. They had mated, joined as one, and now she didn’t want him in her life.

He swallowed the bile rising to his throat. “Would you feel the same way if I were human?”

She tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear, stared at her cup, and shrugged.

He had to win her back, convince her they were meant to be together forever. “You have a mermaid princess on your shoulder.”

She looked past him out the window. “So?”

He wanted to say he was a merman, but she already knew that. He wanted to say they were destined to be together but she already knew that.

She shook her head. “I mean…”

He reached out to touch her arm, but she pulled away so he let his arm fall to his side. “Tell me.”

Her finger traced around the top of the mug. “I don’t know what I mean.”

He needed to change the subject to give her time to process their differences, why they were great together, because deep in her heart she knew they were great together. He retreated to the stove. “We could use some protein after that fantastic workout so I’m cooking eggs and toast.” He took the frying pan from the stove and scooped eggs beside the toast onto the plates. He handed a plate to her. “Here you go.”

She took the plate and sat down at the kitchen table.

He poured himself a coffee and set the mug on the table. Then he picked up his own plate and sat down opposite her. “Hope you like scrambled eggs.”

She stuffed a forkful into her mouth.

He wanted to take her in his arms and tell her everything would work out between them, that their love would survive their differences, but he wasn’t so sure anymore.

Even though they ate in silence, he enjoyed sitting opposite her, drinking in her beauty. Her blue eyes glistened, and her towel-dried auburn hair hung down to her shoulders. When she shifted on the chair, her shorts exposed more of her legs. He wanted to feel them wrap around him one more time.

Behind her, the sun disappeared behind some clouds. A storm was coming. He could either go home right now and give her space or stay here and make love to her as the rain pounded on the roof. He gazed back at her. The decision was made. He’d stay.

He swallowed the last of his coffee and rose from the table. He took the dishes, put them into the dishwasher, and refilled both their cups with coffee. “Why don’t we sit in the living room?”

Cora gave him a weak smile, stood, grabbed her cup, and walked into the room. She sat in the chair opposite the couch and looked out at the ocean.
